Disturbia Typography

I created some experimental type from the song lyrics in disturbia. I chose "a disease of the mind". Here i floated the letters in some bubbly water. I wanted to recreate the texture of cells and the spreading of a disease over the letters. The shape of the bubbles help to mimic this:

Rihanna's Disturbia

To develop my phobias project further I started off by looking at music. I wanted to find some song lyrics that i could experiment with. I chose "Rihanna's, Disturbia". The song lyrics relate well to phobias. Disturbia represents Rihanna's state of mind. In the video she is contemplating or being disturbed by something, just like the way in which phobias disturb your mind. There are some great song lyrics to experiment with like "a disease of the mind" and "I feel like a monster". I've gathered some imagery from the video for inspiration. I'm now going to create some experimental typography based on these lyrics :)

Revisting Phobias

After completing all the tasks set by my teacher for my self initiated, i'm now starting to look into the possible routes i can develop my project into. I've been brainstorming some ideas and i've come up with some broad areas i want to look into:

- Horror Posters/Film Festivals
- Music with fear like lyrics
- Charities that help people overcome their phobias like Anxiety UK
- The illness side of phobias. I want to look at the ways in which phobias can develop into mental illnesses

I'm now going to research into these areas and find a certain theme i can explore further.

RSA Paul Smith Stamps

This brief was set by the RSA. We had to design a set of stamps that would celebrate either British Fashion or British Firsts. I chose fashion as my theme and focused purely on Paul Smith. Paul Smith is one of the UKs most successful Fashion Designers and i felt that a combination of his his iconic stripes and fashion illustration would work well on a stamp. I started off by illustrating some of his key pieces:

After doing these illustrations i felt i needed more texture in my work so i chose to create some collaged fashion illustrations. These work much better and have formed the final basis for my stamps:

Phobia - Richard Vanek Inspired photography

Here's my attempt at a Richard Vanek inspired photograph. I've chosen to represent 'claustrophobia' in his style. I like his contrast of light and dark and his use of shadows and ive tried to incorporate this into my shot:

British Heart Foundation Photography Competition

The annual red for heart photography competition organised by the British Heart Foundation took place this January. The theme was to consider what 'heart means to you'. It was also the 50th birthday of the British Heart Foundation so the theme of celebration could be considered. I chose to photograph a red tealight candle. This links in with the celebration as candles are used in birthdays. The finished shot has a romantic, love like style.

Phobias - My own photography

I used some of my images from the Richard Vanek inspired work but added coloured lights in the background. I love the contrast of the dark hands and coloured lights in these photographs. I think they evoke 'claustrophobia' really well.
